New for 2022! Design & Technology for Years 3 & up
BackFollowing the recent arrival of our brilliant new Head of Design & Technology, Mr Jamie Morris, all students in Years 3 and up can now study Design & Technology (D&T) at Farlington.
Our new D&T Workshop
Our shiny new D&T Workshop was installed over the summer break, and students have been enjoying D&T lessons with Mr Morris in this exciting space since the beginning of the Autumn Term.
The first machine to arrive in the D&T Workshop was the laser cutter, which was soon followed by a range of traditional workshop equipment, including bench drills, sanders and machine-operated saws.
In addition, we have two fantastic 3D printers, and students are able to operate this great – and relatively new – technology directly from their Chromebooks.
During October Half Term, two further machines were added to our D&T Workshop: a vacuum former and a plastic oven, both of which will be used to make different items from a range of plastics, using heat to mould and shape them into new forms.
Why study Design & Technology?
Providing a broad curriculum is very important to us, and enabling our students to study D&T will provide them with valuable skills and open up many opportunities for them – now and in the future.
Please watch the informative video below, produced by The Design & Technology Association, to find out more about D&T as a subject, and why it's so important.
Food & Nutrition
We have taken this opportunity to also revamp and restyle our cooking provision here at Farlington. This area of the curriculum is now known as Food & Nutrition, and Mr Morris is delighted to be leading on this too.
We now have an even stronger focus on healthy eating, and are dedicated to providing students with the tools and strategies they need to make good choices with food. Whilst cooking itself is still at the centre of lessons, nutrition, good hygiene, the environment, and consideration of different cultures, tastes and beliefs, will also be discussed and explored.
