The annual Bellevue Debating Competition took place today at The Oratory Prep School in Reading with ten teams participating from five schools.

Six of our Year 12 students were trained on judging the debates and joined judges from other schools. They were excellent role models with their encouragement, professionalism and thoughtful critiques.

Farlington took eight Year 9 pupils who made up two teams of four. They delivered prepared debates on mandatory voting and public transport. They also crafted an ‘unseen’ debate on the day, proposing that parents should be fined for pupil absence during term-time.

All of our pupils were complimented on their truthful and emotional speaking, their excellent use of statistics, well-formed arguments and considered rebuttals.

Our teams won all six of their debates and finished first place overall in the competition. Their preparation, care, sportsmanship, collaboration and superb oracy skills are to be utterly commended!
